Global (As of 16:00, 25 Feb, Geneva time)
A total of 80,254 (laboratory-confirmed and clinically diagnosed cases) of COVID-19 including 2,701 associated deaths (CFR=3.4%), have been reported from 36 countries. This global figure has not taken into account the additional cases in Kuwait (1), Bahrain (6), Iran (34 and 3 deaths) and Iraq (4 cases).
Deaths were reported from China, Philippines, Japan, Korea, France, Italy and Iran. The clinically diagnosed cases included in the global figure are those reported from Hubei Province in China.
In China: 77,779 confirmed cases (including clinically diagnosed cases) have been reported with 2,666 associated deaths (CFR: 3.4%). The daily number of confirmed cases in China has been stabilizing in the last few days.
Outside China: 2,475 confirmed cases, and 35 associated deaths were reported from 35 countries.
Some media outlets wrote on the press conference, held in Geneva yesterday, underlining that COVID-19 outbreak is 'not yet a pandemic.'
The COVID-19 outbreak in the Republic of Korea is "very grave", President Moon Jae-in said as he visited its epicenter, AFP reported.
As of 25 February 2020, Italian authorities reported 229 cases of COVID-19 and six deaths in total. This represents an increase of 97 new cases since yesterday.
Regional
· As of 25 February, a total of 79 new cases and associated three deaths were reported, and majority were reported from Iran. The region has witnessed a surge of cases in the last two days, and five countries reported new confirmed cases.
Iran reported 34 new confirmed cases today, including 3 deaths, and the total cumulative number increased to 95 cases, including 15 deaths.
Bahrain reported 21 new confirmed cases today, and the total cumulative cases increased to 23 with no deaths. All confirmed cases have travel history to Iran.
Iraq reported four new confirmed cases today, and the total cumulative cases increased to 5 cases with no death. The new cases came from a family of seven who returned from Iran through the Khanaqin border.
Kuwait reported four new confirmed cases today, and the total cumulative cases increased to 9 cases with no death. All have travel history to Iran.
Oman reported two new confirmed cases today, and the total cumulative cases increased to 4 with no death. All confirmed case have travel history to Iran.
EMRO is scaling up the use of social media to disseminate key messages and increase visibility of country-level activities.
A coordination call was held today with WHO country offices technical focal points to discuss early investigations, clinical management network, reporting, IPC, training and other areas.
A risk assessment tool for repatriation of nationals was shared with technical focal points to be used in countries that are repatriating.
Development of monitoring framework using process and output indicators is ongoing
Additional laboratory kits were dispatched today to other priority countries
Coordinating with counterparts to identify relevant information for UNCT and business continuity plans
EMRO input was shared in discussions with HQ and other Regional Offices to update the surveillance guidelines.
In order to complement the global dashboard, and being able to communicate updated figures in countries of the Region more frequently, a regional dashboard is under finalization.
EMRO roster of experts for surge deployment is being updated: A total of 54 external experts identified covering 14 areas of work which include: 65 internal WHO/EMRO staff covering 13 areas of work. 12 experts from Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN)
Resource mobilization efforts at RO are being scaled up given the new developments less
